Kiwix は、ウェブ上の文章をオフラインで読むことのできるソフトです。特に、ネット接続がないときにウィキペディアを読むという用途を想定しています（機能のページを参照）— 船の上でも、何もないところでも、牢屋の中でも。Kiwixは、ZIMファイルというファイルを読み取ることにより動作します。ZIMは、高い圧縮率を誇り、オープンな、メタデータを伴ったファイル形式です。
