:Yes, although this is not always easy to achieve to do so, in particular if the link is in the middle of a sentence. I think we should do a template to abstract this and yes if possible remove it from the text to translate. Kelson (talk) 09:28, 13 January 2015 (CET) |

Kiwix in Wikimania 2009
Hi Kelson.
Yesterday I returned from Wikimania 2009, I held extensive meetings with Jimmy Wales and Florence Devouard. I told them about Kiwix also talk to Samuel to see if we join forces with his WikiBrowser and simple to use kiwix olpc. Hope to see you on IRC and talk about this in more detail --Wilfredor 18:45, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Portuguese (Portugal) translation
Hi, Kelson.
I took the liberty to translate into Portuguese (Portugal) aka pt-PT at Translation/languages/pt-PT. I think I understood how it works: it looks quite basic. If I made some mistake, please let me know.
Cheers, Malafaya 21:29, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Malafaya, Thank you for your help, this looks good. I´m currently in holidays, so I´m not able to test if it work but it should.
You can add the English version of the article in your watchlist and configure your account in the preferences to get an email each time we will modify the master. I will also try to start a ZIM file in Portugese, but I can not promise anything in the next week because I´m pretty busy with other languages and the code of Kiwix itself. In any case I will to it ASAP. Regards Kelson 07:02, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
- I've added the English master and subpages to my watchlist, and subscribed to email on changes. No rush. Enjoy your holidays, Malafaya 08:57, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

- Hi, You can control many things about the ZIM generation process in Hebrew by looking at Translation/languages/he-IL, for the example please look at Translation/languages/en-US. For the bug, this looks not so easy to fix because the double quote character is a special character for the search engine. Please report the bug at http://bugs.kiwix.org and give one or two example for a search string and what you want to get as results. Thank you for testing. Kelson 10:34, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

A bientot. Tu peux me repondre ici . --Helmoony 08:08, 7 April 2012 (CEST)
Salut Helmoony
- http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwix
En échange, je m'engage à faire le boulot d'ici le 20 avril. Dis-moi ce que tu en penses.
Si, cela marche bien, on regardera ensuite pour les autres projets.

Spam
Hi, I saw you have spam here on Kiwix Wiki. Are you removing it? Kind regards, Smile4ever 20:19, 13 June 2012 (CEST)
- Yes, I take care to keep the wiki clean. In fact, this is mainly empty account creation... not more. Regards Kelson 20:23, 13 June 2012 (CEST)
- Okay :) That's fine. We have had spam on another wiki too, but we installed some extensions to MediaWiki and now they don't get in anymore Smile4ever 17:50, 5 July 2012 (CEST)

A couple of questions
Hi Kelson, first of all I want to appreciate your efforts to make this software which help millions of people in the world. I have some question and will thank you if could help me solve them.
1. Please show me a full instructions which explains how to make a ZIM file from different Wikis.
2. Is it possible to add the other namespaces to ZIM files? I used Wikitaxi before, it has a boring GUI with no facilities. But it has two good points. First, you can make ".taxi" file from the ".xml.bz2" files very easily. And second, it contains the "Wikipedia:" namespace. I think it's possible to do that with ZIM files, if yes, how is it?
3. When will you update the enwiki ZIM files? The last one has 45.000 articles (with image), but it's for 2010. Are you going to update that? What about the "All (no pictures)"?
Thanks ●Mehran Debate● 10:11, 14 September 2012 (CEST)
- Hi Mehran. I will try to answer your questions. (1) They are for now no full instructions. The best we have is the articles abouts Tools. The processus is still not realy easy. We focus to improve the tools. (2) It depends, I'm OK do add any "encyclopedic" namespace but I do not want to add the "Wikipedia" namespace - although this is perfectly technicaly feasible. (3) During the winter, we will updates the ZIM files in English. regards Kelson 23:43, 15 September 2012 (CEST)
fawiki
Hi Kelson, is it possible for you to update Farsi ZIM file? It belongs to almost two years ago. If it's not difficult, please refresh that. Thanks :) ●Mehran Debate● 14:12, 26 September 2012 (CEST)
- I have done it, everyhting is on the Kiwix Homepage. Kelson 13:24, 15 November 2012 (CET)
- Hi Mehran, would be great if you could create pages on fawiki similar to the both ones: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwix and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Download#Kiwix . Would that be possible for you ? Regards Kelson 10:13, 19 November 2012 (CET)
- Sure, I'll do ASAP. ;) ●Mehran Debate● 12:49, 19 November 2012 (CET)
- Oh, it seems someone has read our discussion and has created it earlier than me! I just made some clean up. ●Mehran Debate● 14:59, 19 November 2012 (CET)
- Great, thank you very much. Kelson 15:02, 19 November 2012 (CET)
Hi again, I downloaded the ZIM file of fawiki and then open it in Kiwix for indexing. It was indexed correctly, but I can't see it in the "My Library" section. If I open the ZIM file, it shows the homepage and the other pages without any problems, but it doesn't exist in the Library list and I couldn't load it. Where the problem could be? And I also have a suggestion for Kiwix. Please add an option for changing the font. The Persian ordinary font (which used in almost every Farsi website) is "Tahoma". But I think the font used in Kiwix is "Times New Roman" (or maybe "Arial"). It will be useful it we could choose another font. :) ●Mehran Debate● 08:30, 22 November 2012 (CET)
- In the library top left, you have two buttons to switch between local and remote library. I think you have to switch to local, the fawiki must be in one of them. For now Kiwix itself (not for the content) uses the standard operating system font and does not specify anything, so if you want to use tahoma, change it in the OS itself. Kelson 10:24, 22 November 2012 (CET)
- I don't like to disturb your with my trivial question. But I know there are two tabs in Library section, "My Library" and "Get new files". I switched to "My Library" which contains the installed ZIM files. All of the ZIM files which I installed before (like enwiki) are existed, but there is no Fawiki. :( I can open the ZIM file manually, it doesn't ask me for indexing, but I can't open it from Library. Did you try it yourself? Does it related to previous Persian ZIM file? ●Mehran Debate● 14:55, 24 November 2012 (CET)
- You do not bother me of course, but I have no clue what is your isse. For me, everything works fine. Could you send please per email a copy of your library.xml file (in your kiwix profile directory)? Kelson 21:28, 24 November 2012 (CET)
- I didn't find any "Library.xml" file in the Kiwix directory. I searched "Library.xml", but there is just one result, "preferences.js". Is it the one you want? ●Mehran Debate● 05:19, 25 November 2012 (CET)
- library.xml on Windows should be on our user account "Application data/www.kiwix.org/" directory. Kelson 09:59, 25 November 2012 (CET)

Indexing problem
Hi, please help me. I did download the "wikipedia_en_all_nopic_01_2012.zim" (which is not Pre-indexed), it asked me for indexing before, so I chose YES. At first it took a time about 15 minutes for indexing each percent, but now after 30 hours, it just progressed 69% and make a percent in about one hour (or event more). I think it won't complete indexing with this speed! Are there anyways to index this ZIM file without the Kiwix directly? Thanks Mariusz 12:32, 4 November 2012 (CET)
- Hi Mariusz. Yes, the indexing is really slow, but we can quickly index something like 5 millions of HTML documents. There is also a command tool called kiwix-index to do the job on the command line, but this will be exactly as slow and you will have to modify afterwards things manually (in library.xml) that Kiwix understands where is the new idx path... So, if that too long, I propose you simply to work without the fulltext index. What I can say in addition is: (1) we have fixed the problem that ZIP files do not have the index (like announced) (2) We will allow soon on Kiwix do load a idx file/directory from a custom path. Thank your for your feedback, feel free to report again any problem/whish. Regards Kelson 12:43, 4 November 2012 (CET)
- So if it really is a time-consuming process, I think I should wait till the completion. It's now in 71% and just progressed two percents since I left you the message. Kiwix is a very very useful project, one of the most valuable programs I've ever seen. I wish that we could have any [free license] references in the ZIM files. Best wishes. Mariusz 14:10, 4 November 2012 (CET)
- Yes, I agree: we should fix that too (add the free license in the footer). Will be done in the next months. Thank you for your encouragements... Kelson 14:43, 4 November 2012 (CET)
--- Hi again, at last indexing was finished right now! But there is a problem, it doesn't show some of the entries. E.g. in an article, there is a link for "Bill Goldberg", but when I type it in the box, nothing is displayed! Is it normal or not? Mariusz 20:41, 5 November 2012 (CET)
- Hi Mariusz. I do not now exactly what you do, but there is a "Bill Goldberg" article in the file. What do you type exactly in the search box? What do you get? What do you want to get? Kelson 21:41, 5 November 2012 (CET)
- Oh right, forgive my mistake! I typed it again and it showed the entry "Bill Goldberg". I didn't know that Kiwix is case-sensitive, so I typed "bill goldberg" and no results was displayed! It will be good if Kiwix could be work with both upper-case and lower-case letters in the next version to prevent such problems for dummies like me! sincerely yours Mariusz 08:47, 6 November 2012 (CET)
- The fulltext search engine is case insensitive (based on xapian), but the suggestion system (based on the zimlib, works natively) is. We have also to improve that ;) Kelson 18:38, 6 November 2012 (CET)

template black list
Hi, I saw you create regularly some pages which contain several templates in a specific Wikipedia. Is it easy for you to do that or it's a time-consuming task? I can help you to do it very quickly if you want. There is a gadget in Wikipedia which translate the links (here Template links) to every language you want. It could be very useful for this process. Tell me if you want, please. ●Mehran Debate● 10:14, 27 November 2012 (CET)
- Hi Mehran, thank you for your offer. You are right, is should optimize this process. What is the name of this gadget? I guess this is based on the interwiki links? I should build a script to do something similar. The reason I still do not have doing it is that I fear that if the interwiki links are wrong, we will remove essential templates. Kelson 10:23, 27 November 2012 (CET)
- In fact it's not a gadget, here is the script. You should just add the above page in your common.js. (Like this) I've used it on many occasions, it works without any problems. It based on the interwiki links, but in the case of your anxiety (wrong links), I think the templates which you use are generally identical and correct, anyway you can check the links quickly to verify if they're wrong or not, it's faster than run each page separately. BTW it leaves the red links alone. Try it maybe it could help the project. :) ●Mehran Debate● 12:46, 27 November 2012 (CET)
About turkish translation
Hi Kelson, I added the Turkish translation of the main page. But I don't know how to link it to the main page navigation bar. Regards, Khadkhall 12:14, 11 January 2013 (CET)

I want to contribute to Wiki and Zim files
Hi Kelson,
I want to contribute to Kiwix. At the present, I am interested in these:
- Editing and improving the Kiwix wiki
- Creating and uploading zim files.
I am using Kiwix for more than a year now. But I am not happy with my Wikipedia version of 2012. I require the latest version but found no zim files from Kiwix. But I found bzip2 database from Wikipedia. I am thinking to convert it to zim file for me and other people.
Kindly guide me on these:
- How can I upload converted zim files to Kiwix site for others to download?
- Will that zim file will be able to download for others?
If you have any more suggestions then I'd be glad to hear them.
Waiting for your response.
Thanks!

- Dear Akapribot. Thank you for your proposition. Do you have skills in coding? Kelson (talk) 16:40, 1 July 2013 (CEST)
- I am a beginner in coding. I have some knowledge of HTML, CSS, C++, and Java. Actually, I tried to find some development section on wiki, but unable to get one. I can try to help if you tell from where and how to start? Please help. --Ashutosh Kumar Singh (talk) 17:07, 1 July 2013 (CEST)
- I'm currently working to build a new Wikipedia dumper in nodejs. You could maybe have a look ? https://sourceforge.net/p/kiwix/other/ci/master/tree/mwhtmldumper/ Kelson (talk) 17:39, 1 July 2013 (CEST)
- I read it. Till this time, code is written to download content from Wikipedia and create HTML files. Right? Though I am new to nodejs, I think I might help if you can guide me what to do and also provide some details and documentation that how are we creating the dump? --Ashutosh Kumar Singh (talk) 01:29, 2 July 2013 (CEST)
- Yes, this script is a prototype to download articles from Wikipedia. The old way we were using doesn't work anymore this is why I work on that new script now. The approach is to create a directory on the hard-disk with all the pictures and html pages and then transform this directory to a ZIM file (I have a script to do that). One of the things to do with this script is to better retrieve js/css, if you have a look in details, you will see all the necessary css/js code is not downloaded from the wikipedia. So it would be great if you could fix that? 10:14, 2 July 2013 (CEST)
- Sorry for taking so much time. I was busy setting up Ubuntu and node.js to test your code. I tested it but can't find the problem. JS and CSS are dumped as properly as possible. For this, I quick scanned the original CSS/JS with dumped ones. I think they are nicely minimized in head and body (.js and .css) files.
- Yes, I got some errors while script was downloading images (errors occurred sometimes while everything worked well rest of the times). If you still think JS/CSS is not loaded properly, please send me some details or example tests or something similar. If I can help in any other way too then I'd love to. Thanks! --Ashutosh Kumar Singh (talk) 16:33, 3 July 2013 (CEST)
- Nice, you have achieved to run it. One think which does not work is the hide/show javascript links in the boxes at the bottom of the page. This is one of the things which worry me... Feel free to join us on irc Freenode #kiwix chat channel. Regards Kelson (talk) 16:39, 3 July 2013 (CEST)
- Oh yes, it took me sometime to figure out the dependencies (nodejs modules) though. Which page are we talking about here? The html file dumped using script? I will be on #kiwix in a day or two. Thanks! --Ashutosh Kumar Singh (talk) 22:54, 3 July 2013 (CEST)
Cordialement, --BonifaceFR (talk) 14:05, 20 November 2013 (CET)

User guide missing from LanguageStats
Do you know why the User guide doesn't appear in LanguageStats like the rest of the translatable pages?
By the way, the User guide has some large paragraphs to translate. It would be better to have either small paragraphs or keep the actual ones but change the translate tags, so that each tranlation string consist of fewer sentences.
Reply here. Thanks in advance. Macofe (talk) 20:36, 6 January 2015 (CET)
- Hi Macofe, I have fixed it. For any reason, this page was listed in "should better not be translated". Kelson (talk) 20:42, 7 January 2015 (CET)
Avoinding templates in translations
On Saturday, Fuzzybot updated the translation of the Main Page with the changes you made. I think it is unnecessary, confusing, and error prone for translators that something like the following appears in the strings to translate:
BASEPAGENAMEE|Features|}}|More features...
Only 'More features' should be translatable there. Same thing for the others changes. Macofe (talk) 23:39, 12 January 2015 (CET)
